In the shadowy underbelly of professional wrestling, few characters have evoked as much terror and intrigue as The Boogeyman. Martin Wright burst onto the WWE scene in 2005 after Wright's raw charisma caught the eye of WWE executives, leading to his eerie debut on SmackDown.
Portrayed as a nightmarish figure from children's fears, The Boogeyman quickly became a fan favorite for his unpredictable antics and spine-chilling presence. The Boogeyman's gimmick was a masterclass in horror-themed wrestling. With his face painted in tribal patterns, clad in tattered clothing, and wielding a staff adorned with shrunken heads, he embodied pure dread.
His entrances were legendary: crawling from under the ring, reciting ominous rhymes, and smashing clocks over his bald head while chanting, "I'm The Boogeyman, and I'm coming to getcha!" But his most infamous trait was devouring live worms, often force-feeding them to defeated foes, blending psychological warfare with grotesque spectacle that left audiences both horrified and hooked.
Throughout his WWE tenure until 2009, and sporadic returns thereafter, The Boogeyman left an indelible mark on sports entertainment. Feuds with stars like Booker T, JBL, and Finlay showcased his athleticism beneath the macabre facade, earning him a cult following. Though never a titleholder, his influence endures in pop culture, inspiring Halloween costumes and memes. The Boogeyman proved that in wrestling, fear can be the ultimate weapon, reminding fans that nightmares can come true in the squared circle.
Meet Marty Wright as the Boogeyman on Saturday and Sunday at the Washington State Horror Con happening from October 24th through the 26th. He will be signing autographs and taking photos (in makeup) at the show.
