Mark Duplass, alongside his brother Jay, co-founded Duplass Brothers Productions in 1996, channeling their passion for raw, improvised storytelling into low-budget indie films. Their breakthrough came with the 2005 road-trip dramedy The Puffy Chair, which Duplass co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in, capturing the awkward intimacies of modern relationships. This DIY ethos propelled them forward, blending humor, vulnerability, and emotional depth in projects like the meta-horror Baghead (2008), where aspiring filmmakers confront their fears in a cabin getaway.
Duplass's foray into horror began with Creep (2014), a found-footage thriller he co-wrote and starred in as the unsettling Josef, a client whose videography session spirals into terror. He reprised the role in Creep 2 (2017), escalating the psychological dread, and extended the franchise with the anthology series The Creep Tapes (2024) on Shudder. These films showcased his chameleon-like ability to shift from affable everyman to chilling antagonist, earning praise for their intimate, lo-fi scares.
Duplass tackled supernatural chills in The Lazarus Effect (2015) as a scientist resurrecting the dead. Beyond horror, Duplass's acting credits span indies and prestige TV, including the quirky time-travel rom-com Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), the marital mind-bender The One I Love (2014), and heartfelt dramas like Blue Jay (2016) and Paddleton (2019).
On television, he starred in The League (2009–2015), co-created and starred in the HBO series Togetherness (2015–2016), and earned two Emmy nods for his layered portrayal of tech exec Chip Black in The Morning Show (2019–present).
Meet Mark Duplass all weekend at the Washington State Horror Con from October 24th through the 26th. He will be signing autographs, taking photos, and speaking on a panel at the show.
